Peter Paige and Bradley Bedeweg: The Men Behind “The Fosters”
Jim Halterman | June 3, 2013
It’s become something of a rite of passage for a television series prominently featuring gay characters to get the One Million Moms and their collective panties (this past season’s The New Normal, for example) in a bunch and Disney-owned ABC Family’s new drama, The Fosters, is no exception.
In the new series, premiering tonight at 9pm, two lesbians in a committed relationship (played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum) show that family has less to do with traditional and outdated definitions as they raise a group of kids, one that is biological, some that have been adopted and one that comes to them in the pilot via the foster system. The one thing the two women give them and the kids give back is love. (Sounds like a family to me, right?)
The creators of The Fosters are Peter Paige (best known for his work in front of the camera on Queer As Folk) and his writing partner Bradley Bredeweg. The two sat down with us last week on the show’s set to talk about the origins of the series (which is also Executive Produced by Jennifer Lopez) and what they have to say to anyone opposing this family. (Cast interviews can be found on our sister site, AfterEllen).
The Fosters airs Mondays at 9pm on ABCFamily.
