Jonathan Groff Shows Off His Pits, Talks Steamy Sex Scenes In ‘Looking’ Season 2

Scene magazine hails Jonathan Groff as “this century’s gay icon” in a new profile posted this week, pointing to his casual and non-dramatic coming out process as a “sign of the changing times” and indicative of a “New Hollywood” generation.

The 29-year-old Tony-nominated actor is also putting his glorious pits on display in an exclusive photoshoot with Scene photographer Matthew Scrivens.

In the accompanying interview, he explains why he stays away from social media, how his breakup with Zachary Quinto influenced his drama-free lifestyle, and who he’s dying to have onscreen sex with in the upcoming season of Looking.

On the topic of coming out (which he did officially at the 2009 National Equality March in D.C.), Groff tells Scene that the decision was easy. “Being in love was more powerful than any job I’d had before,” he says. “That was the impetus.”

On refusing to take part in celebrity culture:

Groff has had a crash course in what it means to be a gay celebrity in the era of Perez Hilton: he was linked romantically to actor Zachary Quinto when the Star Trek star was still in the closet, though the two have since broken up. Groff’s way of dealing with the drama was by refusing to take part in any of the Internet celebrity culture.

“I heard from friends of friends or whatever that like, ‘This picture was online’ or ‘I saw you and Zach walking down the street.’ So I’d know that things like that existed, but I don’t ever look at it.”

On his dream Looking sex scene:

As for the next season of Looking, Groff stands by his “dream cameo,” Odd Future’s Frank Ocean. But if he had to pick someone to do a sex scene with, it’d be his C.O.G. co-star Corey Stoll. (You may remember him as the doomed Russo from the first season of House of Cards.)

“We had a potentially almost romantic scene, but then it turned out to be not romantic,” Groff says of filming C.O.G., a movie based on a David Sedaris short story, with Stoll. “So I would like to fulfill that—the starting of the relationship, and maybe have a love affair with Corey Stoll.”

During a panel discussion following a press screening last night for HBO Films’ The Normal Heart, HBO President Len Amato (pictured left) announced that Ryan Murphy, the film’s director, would be taking over as showrunner for the HBO original series Looking in its second season.

“HBO had a great experience with Ryan on Heart,” Amato said. “We’re really thrilled about continuing that partnership and seeing what his unique vision will bring to Looking.”

Looking, which follows three gay men in present-day San Francisco, received mostly positive critical reviews but failed to pick up the kind of watercooler buzz surrounding HBO’s more popular series. Industry insiders view the decision to bring Murphy on board as a clear-cut strategy to bring in a wider audience.

During the panel discussion, Murphy elaborated on the exact changes he plans to make in Looking’s second season. “The biggest change — and the one I’m most excited about — is moving the show to Los Angeles,” he said, adding, “No offense to San Francisco, but L.A. is just so much more exciting and glamorous. And it will enable us to have all these amazing celebrity cameos!”

Murphy elaborated that he’d already lined up Gwyneth Paltrow, Zachary Quinto, and NeNe Leakes for recurring roles.
To facilitate the move to Los Angeles, Murphy explained that Season Two will find Patrick (Jonathan Groff) inheriting a karaoke bar in the Valley, and deciding to move to Los Angeles to run it with help from his friends Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Dom (Murray Bartlett).

“I’d worked with Jonathan on Glee,” Murphy said, “and he’s got this incredible instrument … But honestly, they were just wasting his talents on the first season of Looking.” Murphy elaborated that the karaoke setting would afford Groff’s character continuous opportunities to sing, kicking off with a soulful acoustic version of “Let It Go” in the Season Two premiere.

Additionally, Murphy plans on tinkering with the look and design of the show, starting with mandatory close shaves and waxing for the main characters. “I just never got the whole facial hair thing,” he said. “Blech, who wants to see that?”

He’s also enlisting Glee costumer designer Elizabeth Martucci to “brighten” things up. “I want to see those guys in Technicolor blazers and shorts and bowties and porkpie hats,” Murphy said.

Speaking of Glee, Murphy said that he’s looking forward to potential Glee crossover episodes. One idea is to have Blaine (Darren Criss) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) coming to L.A. to find a surrogate mother for their baby, perhaps to be played by American Horror Story alumna Emma Roberts. “I’m thinking the guys could stumble into Groff’s bar and all sing an a cappella version of ‘Baby It’s You.’ Or maybe ‘Wanted Dead or Alive,’ we’ll figure that out later,” he said.

Asked about other potential storylines for Looking, Murphy said some ideas include Agustin accidentally undergoing gay conversion therapy and starting to date women, and Dom entering a monastery being menaced by a demented monsignor secretly turning the monks into freakish alien hybrids.

When asked if Murphy is worried about alienating the show’s existing fans, Murphy reassured, “These are just some minor cosmetic changes … I promise it’s going to be the same show everyone knows and loves. Just completely different.”

In other news, Murphy announced he’s planning a reboot of The New Normal, this time with a straight couple.

We're not giving you all the details, but if you watch the new episode on Sunday, you'll see Jonathan Groff giving some major O-face duriing an eye-popping sex scene with Raúl Castillo.

(For those who don't know, the series centers on a group of gay friends living in San Francisco with Groff leading the ensemble as Patrick, a video game developer navigating dating and romance.)

"You can't lie in those scenes," Groff told me at the Savannah College Art and Design's aTVfest. "You can't fake those scenes."

"The great thing about me and Raúl is that we both come from the theater," Groff said. "We're both very comfortable with our bodies, very comfortable with each other, [we were] very comfortable being naked together from the beginning. That builds a lot of trust. We built a lot of trust between us so you could really go there and we totally went there in that scene."

Their straight female director of photography, Reed Morano, was very impressed.

"She was in the bed with us," Gorff said. "We were in bed and there she was in bed capturing what was happening…She said, 'This is the hottest sex scene I've ever experienced shooting.'"

On finding his O-face, Groff cracked, "It took years of practice."

Costar Murray Bartlett, who plays Dom, had a similar scene in the first episode.

"You just try to put yourself in the moment and let it happen," the hunky Aussie said. "It's the best way to get your O-face."

It also helps when it's a closed set like it was for his wham-bam-thank-you-man scene. "You get in there and you basically have a sock covering your junk," Bartlett said. "You're in there basically naked with these people. I feel like once you're in that sort of situation, your inhibitions sort of drop away. You just focus on what you're doing in the scene, which is try to make it as truthful and organic as possible."

Jonathan Groff wants some more Glee.

Lea Michele's Tony-nominated bestie appeared on the hit Fox series as Jesse St. James, a male lead of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline and a love interest for Rachel Berry.

"The clock is ticking," Groff told me this weekend in Atlanta at the Savannah College of Art and Design's aTVfest, where he was promoting his new HBO dramedy, Looking. "I hope so. I have no idea, [but] I would love to go back. I would love to."

Looking certainly is no Glee. The series, which premiered last month, centers on a group of gay friends living in San Francisco. (It's been called the gay Girls, Friends and even Seinfeld.)

Groff stars as Patrick, a 29-year-old video game developer who is intent on finding love. We've already seen him hookup with a Latino barber (the very hot Raúl Castillo) and now he's falling for his new boss Kevin (played by the also very hot Russell Tovey).

In tonight's episode, Patrick and his friends attend the Folsom Street Fair, San Fran's legendary outdoor leather fetish festival.

Groff is seen wearing a leather vest with no shirt underneath. They shot on location while the fair was going on.

"I had never been to the Folsom Street Fair and it was an experience," Groff said. "We felt very bonded as a cast and a crew after that day. It was inspiring to see people letting their freak flag fly and it was horrifying to see men like on hooks being thrown through the air. It was a lot. It was a lot of things."

HBO has yet to decide on a second season, but if there is one, Groff would love a certain singer-songwriter to play his love interest.

"Frank Ocean," he says when I ask about his dream guest star. "Frank Ocean is the first one that comes to my head. He's completely like my celeb crush. He's amazing."

After our interview at a Looking panel I moderated, executive producer Sarah Condon revealed that they actually did approach Ocean about being on the show, but he wasn't available because he was touring. "I didn't know that!" Groff said.

Fingers-crossed there's not only a season two, but Ocean is free to do some Looking.

UPDATE: Omg! spoke on Friday with multiple sources who have insight to the relationship, who tell us the following: Zachary and Jonathan broke up around five months ago and remain close friends. They even had dinner together a couple of weeks ago.

News of their breakup first surfaced last week, when both were expected to attend the opening night of Outfest (the L.A. gay and lesbian film festival), in support of Jonathan's new film "C.O.G.", but everyone was surprised when Zachary didn't join him on the red carpet.

Zachary was also seen on a date with another guy at a Cinema Society screening of Madonna's new concert  in NYC a few weeks. According to our source, they were "openly affectionate."

They broke up both because of their busy schedules and the fact that they wanted different things from the relationship.

Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff have called it quits as a couple, several outlets report, although they apparently have been dunzo for a while now.

The "Star Trek Into Darkness" star and the "Glee" guest actor broke up last spring, according to Gossip Cop and Us Weekly. While both outlets report that they remain good friends, Perez Hilton claims that things did "not end well." The couple reportedly started dating in early 2012.

Us Weekly points out that it was distance that put a strain on the relationship. "Zach being away and filming was not easy on them," a source tells the mag. "Now he's going to be in New York with his new play ['The Glass Menagerie']. They really loved each other, so it wasn't an easy split."

As mentioned, the thespians are on friendly terms. According to JustJared.com, Quinto went to see Groff perform recently on stage (Groff appeared this spring in L.A. Theatre Works's production of the play "Red," as well as a one-night only benefit performance of "The Pirates of Penzance" in NYC on June 10).

But the couple hasn't been photographed together since back in February, when they were seen out walking their dogs together in Boston. Quinto was snapped walking the pups with a mystery man in NYC in early June.

It's been a tough week for Groff, who is best friends with "Glee" star Lea Michele. He reportedly flew immediately to be by her side in the wake of her boyfriend Cory Monteith's death on Saturday. Groff — who was also friends with Monteith — and Michele met when they co-starred on Broadway together in 2006's "Spring Awakenings." He was previously romantically linked to Broadway star Gavin Creel.

Groff is currently in production on "Glee" showrunner Ryan Murphy's film version of Larry Kramer's "The Normal Heart." Next, he'll be shooting a new series for HBO about the contemporary gay male experience living in San Francisco (which some have called "the gay 'Girls'"), in which he plays a video game designer who's looking for love on OKCupid. He recently gave an extended interview to the San Francisco Chronicle talking about his upcoming projects.

This was the first significant gay relationship for Quinto since he came out of the closet in October 2011. The actor acknowledged in a blog post on his personal website that he was motivated to do so by the suicide of teen Jamey Rodemeyer. "In light of jamey's death," he wrote, "It became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality."

Omg! reached out to reps for both actors about their breakup. Groff's rep has "no comment" and Quinto's rep has not yet replied as of publication.

Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff are said to not be on speaking terms after they recently broke up.

The Star Trek Into Darkness actor and his partner dated for almost a year.

Apparently the pair are no longer on speaking terms after ending the relationship acrimoniously.

A source told PerezHilton.com it "not end well” between the men.

Zachary, 37, was recently seen walking their dogs with another man, according to the website.

The reason for the split remains unclear.

Zachary confirmed their romance during an interview published last September.

“One of the most defining conversations that I had with myself was that absolutely no good can come from me staying quiet about [my sexuality]. Literally, no good can come from it,” he told Out magazine. “But if I take the step to make the acknowledgment and be honest, so much good could potentially come from it.

“I’m incredibly happy, I’m incredibly lucky,” he added in regards to his relationship with Jonathan.

In March, engagement rumours began to swirl.

Apparently Zachary was thinking about popping the question to his love.

"It’s by far the happiest relationship he’s ever been in,” a source told America’s Star magazine. “They’ve been serious for a while now, but things have heated up since they started living together."

Jonathan meanwhile recently stopped work on his new film and jet from New York to Los Angeles to console his best friend and Glee co-star Lea Michele in the wake Cory Monteith’s death.

Lea was dating the actor at the time of his sudden passing on Saturday.

A coroner ruled this week Cory died from a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol.

It's splitsville for "Star Trek" hunk Zachary Quinto and boyfriend Jonathan Groff.

According to both US Weekly and Perez Hilton, the handsome pair's conflicting work schedules were to blame for the breakup.

"Zach being away and filming was not easy on them," US Weekly quotes a source as saying. "Now he's going to be in New York with his new Broadway play 'The Glass Menagerie.' They really loved each other, so it wasn't an easy split."

Meanwhile, Perez Hilton cites a source who claims the split was far from amiable, noting that things did "not end well" for the Hollywood pair.

Groff, a Broadway veteran known for his role on TV's "Boss" opposite Kelsey Grammar as well as guest-starring stints on "Glee," is currently gearing up to star in an as-yet-untitled HBO series which he recently described as focusing on "the gay experience." He'll also be seen opposite Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo in the film version of Larry Kramer's "The Normal Heart," which is set to air on HBO next year.

Groff is also said to be consoling "Glee" co-star Lea Michele, whom he befriended during the run of Broadway's "Spring Awakening," on the death of her boyfriend Cory Monteith, according to US Weekly.

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto has split from his long-term boyfriend Jonathan Groff.

The pair are said to be 'remaining friends' following the end of their romance, having quietly parted ways earlier this year.

Zachary, 34, and Jonathan, 28, broke-up in the Spring but they decided not to go public about the end of their relationship.

A source close to the situation told the GossipCop blog 'they remain friends' and added there is 'nothing salacious' to the story.

The private couple had last been photographed together last September leading to rumors of a potential rift between them.

Zachary joined the ranks of celebrities like Ricky Martin, Lance Bass and Ellen DeGeneres by publicly admitting that he was gay back in 2011.

The following year he and former Glee star Jonathan went public about their relationship.

And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say Why?

According to an Us Weekly report, "Star Trek" lead Quinto and "Glee” actor Groff have called it quits due to their busy acting schedules.

Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff have ended their relationship after over a year together.

The actors “remain friends” and there is “nothing salacious” to the story, according to Gossip Cop. In fact, Zach reportedly went to see Jon on stage recently, despite quietly breaking up in the spring.

Zachary came out of the closet back in 2011 and confirmed his relationship with Jonathan the next year. They were last photographed together back in September in Los Angeles.

We've been following the career of Broadway babe Jonathan Groff since his explosive debut in Spring Awakening, for which he was nominated for a Tony (one of the youngest Best Actor nominees ever) for the role of Melchior Gabor
