Andrew Garfield Asks “Why Can’t Spider-Man Be Gay?”

Andrew Garfield Asks “Why Can’t Spider-Man Be Gay?”

Andrew Garfield may not be the first cutie to don the all-powerful Spider-Man costume, but he’s definitely the first to use it as a man-magnet.

The easily excitable The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actor told EW this week that he has often had “philosophical discussions” with the film’s producer, Matt Tolmach, about exploring the character’s sexuality on film. “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he says. “What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys.”

To which we say “he can!” He’s been gay in our fantasies since before you were born, Mr. Garfield, and we fully approve of you making out with other men in or out of costume.

Garfield is gunning for a gay makeout sesh so badly that he’s already chosen an actor to play his onscreen beau. “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire,” he said. “He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

WE’RE READY.

US state of Indiana will jail gay couples who attempt to marry from next year

While the US Supreme Court has struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, the law that denied same-sex couples federal recognition, the US state of Indiana has passed a law that would result in gay couples being jailed for up to 18 months if they attempt to apply for a marriage license.

Politicians in the Republican state have amended a 1997 law that makes furnishing false information on a marriage license a Class D felony. The amendment means that same-sex couples who apply for a marriage license could face up to 18 months in prison and a $10,000 if they attempt to apply for a marriage license. The new law also means that a clergyman, judge, mayor, city clerk or town clerk-treasurer that officiates at a marriage of a gay couple will also be jailed for a year and a half.

The law means that campaigners such as the Campaign for Southern Equality’s ‘We Do’ Campaign, that encourages same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses as a protest will be prevented from doing so.

This week, Indiana Governor Mike Pence has apologised after a series of pro-equal marriage comments by ‘fans’ were deleted from his official Facebook page by staff members.

In 2011, the Indiana Senate approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages and civil unions by 40 votes to 10. The public gallery had to be cleared after gay rights protesters shouted at politicians.

Male homosexuality was made legal in 1977 and same-sex couples have been able to adopt following a 2006 court ruling. However, LGBT people are afforded no legal protections against discrimination on the grounds of their sexuality by private employers. State employees have been protected following an executive order in 2004.

"Torchwood" and "Arrow" star John Barrowman marries in California

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 7:13pm by Megan Townsend, GLAAD's Entertainment and Operations Coordinator

John Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who, Arrow) today married his partner of over 20 years, Scott Gill, in California. Check out a video below that the couple posted to Twitter on their way to their ceremony.

John Barrowman on WhoSay

Last Wednesday, June 26, the Supreme Court struck down a key section of the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act" and restored marriage equality to California with the end of Prop. 8. Two days later, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit lifted its stay and marriage equality resumed in California immediately.

Congratulations to John and Scott, and all other couples now able to be legally married in the state of California!
